Alkaline Water for Improved Health

Water Water Water!

Now I’m so excited and satisfied about gulping down liters of filtered water until I hear the buzz about alkaline water. I didn’t even know it was a ‘thing’ until in Vegas a few weeks ago. What’s the buzz all about?

I had to find out if the alkaline water was something I should be consuming at a rapid rate. Many health clinics are now marketing alkaline water as the solution to most lifestyle diseases and body weight management.

Is alkaline water beneficial or is it the new fad?

Quick internet research provided basic facts, so scientifically speaking, the alkalinity of water is measured on a pH scale ranging from 1 to 14. The normal drinking water has a pH of around 7. However, alkaline water may have a pH of 9. Our wonderful bodies also have the natural ability to balance the alkalinity by using the liver and kidneys to create the acid balance.

The idea of drinking alkaline water is based on the fact that modern diets contain too many acid-rich proteins.

Alkaline water is heavy in alkalizing minerals therefore is seen as a way of reducing the acidity in the body.

While this may seem like a logical explanation, there is no scientific evidence to prove the health benefits of alkaline water.

Those who propose the use of alkaline water say that may:

  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Reduce aging effects
  • Help in cleansing the colon
  • Promote skin health and hydration
  • Helps burn calories
  • Help fight cancer

While there is no conclusive scientific research that backs these claims, it sure seems like a positive lifestyle choice. Some studies show that the use of alkaline water has significant effects on weight loss, skin hydration, and reducing aging signs, but normal water can also have similar effects.

I’m an advocate of consuming 3-4 liters of water a day and I’ll try the alkaline water if it’s readily available. Sometimes I find just looking for a place to fill my water bottle is a challenge.

For a lifestyle change…

  1. Squeeze a lime or lemon in your water to raise the alkalinity
  2. Adopt a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which promotes alkalinity.
  3. Avoid foods with high acidities, such as grains, sugar, and dairy, etc.
  4. Talk to your doctor if you have kidney issues or taking certain medications before consuming alkaline water.
